"Hello future students! My name is Marissa and I am an experienced, engaging, and professional teacher. I've taught elementary school for seven years in Los Angeles, California with experience in multiple grade levels. I believe that no matter your learning style or background, every student has the ability to thrive in the classroom. My goal as a tutor is to help every student reach their highest potential and become independent learners. This begins by meeting individual needs. Learning should be engaging, fun, and challenging. I aim to remove academic frustrations and help students become confident, lifelong learners.
Having initially embarked on a career with the federal government, in 2013 I made the decision to follow my passion and pursue a career in education, undertaking a Masters Degree in Teaching and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. I completed my undergraduate degree at University of Southern California, Fight On! I am an avid reader, travel enthusiast, and die hard Laker fan. I look forward to working with you!
Unlike many, I love teaching math. I have created my own math curriculum, attended conferences, and received many hours of professional development on best teaching practices in math. My basic philosophy is that math should begin with hands on, tactile learning using real life problems and manipulatives. This helps students see patterns and make connections to prior learning and experiences. Once students begin to understand the problem they are solving, math lessons move toward concepts and formulas.
I love to read, and truly enjoy helping others become better readers. I have taught young children, focusing on foundational skills such as letters and sounds. I also have experience teaching older students how to dig deeper into texts to enhance their comprehension skills. Reading should be enjoyable and academic at the same time." less...
