"I have both a master's and a doctorate in English Literature, and I've been a professor for more than 20 years, both in the classroom and as a tutor. In that time, I've learned that students need someone to understand their needs as individuals. Not everyone learns the same way, at the same pace, or with the same level of struggle. My delight has been searching for the right approach for each individual, finding a way to help the student develop and understand her or his own challenges--and the strengths that can be used to overcome those challenges. I also love language: the ways words work, how they can be used in unique and interesting ways to convey our precise meaning. I insist on clarity: it's often difficult to be clear, but only when we are clear in our words can we truly own our own thinking. I also insist on careful, critical reading, with attention to detail, as details are what make the deeper meaning in anything we read.

I love the moments when students suddenly understand something, or suddenly realize they can make something better without my help. My main goal is to give each student the skills to make myself unnecessary: I want my students to have their own verbal wings. I have taught everything from basic freshman composition to advanced literature electives, including honors courses. In the process, I've had to help students not only with how well they write but also how well they read. I also worked as an editor for a major art museum for years before I began my teaching career, which required not only cleaning up and clarifying the prose written by scholars but also proofreading: it's a skill I use professionally, so I know what it takes. My graduate degrees are in English Literature, and I've taught courses from American Literature surveys, to genre courses (poetry, short story, SF, mystery and detective fiction), to theme-focused literature courses.
