"Teaching and learning could be quite challenging. However, no matter how challenging they may be, commitment to learning and teaching holds the key to overcoming any challenge. I have always had passion for learning and teaching and have made a personal effort to learn something new each time I read or interact with someone. This is a goal I set for myself quite early in life as I grew up in an environment where we didn’t have all that it took to learn. Growing up in this environment encouraged me to value every moment and opportunity devoted to learning. As a teacher, I love to see my students go home each day satisfied, especially with regards to the lesson taught or new knowledge gained.

I have had opportunities of teaching a wide range of students. I first started teaching in the university after graduating from college. I taught both Freshmen and Seniors English composition courses and Technical Report Writing. As a graduate student/Teaching Assistant at Howard University, Washington DC, I taught a mixed-class comprising of both Juniors and Seniors a literature course entitled, “Women in Writing” where we explored the writings of women from different racial and national identities. I was also a Tutor at the Howard University Writing Center for one year.

While I have spent a greater time teaching at the universities and adults, I have also taught at DC Public schools where I was privilege to teach students from Pre K-12. In terms of my teaching style, while I would love to see my students learn something new, I try as much as possible to make learning less of a burden but engaging for each student. One of the techniques that I have found useful is to use everyday experiences or objects to explain abstract things. I encourage my students also to connect the texts to the world outside the classroom. My primary objective as a teacher/tutor is not only for my students to understand the materials that I cover in class and but also to apply the knowledge gained in different settings.
