"I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland (UMD) in 2015. I have an associates degree in General studies and a Bachelors in Communications. I was also vice president of Communications for my school's International club. In all of my job duties, from my internship with America Reads*America Counts (AR*AC), to my current position at Connections Education, I assist in editing presentations, documents, and how-to guides.
I have tutored students in elementary school via AR*AC, middle schoolers via AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), and my peers at UMD. I also participated in Conversation Partners at UMD wherein I met regularly with graduate students to improve their English speaking skills. Throughout my years of tutoring I have discovered the greatest indicators of growth stem from a teacher's ability to customize lesson plans and a student's willingness to ask questions. I received my CELTA certification (ESOL) via Cambridge University in December 2017.
I like to start lesson plans by asking the student what their strengths and weaknesses are and what they'd like to achieve. From there, I can begin to develop a plan that fits their needs. My lesson plans vary widely from incorporating music to writing stories. These are not the only methods I use but rather a few examples from my work in the past. I also assist in editing essays, papers, presentations, and mentoring in public speaking. Depending on what the student wants, I can work with them from start to finish of each project or meet with them to review a project.
In my personal opinion, a good lesson does not necessarily require a breakthrough. Rather, it is a matter of learning how my students learn best. As with most things, practice makes perfect but without questions a teacher does not know what may be hindering their student’s ability to learn. That is why I always encourage questions." less...
