"I’ve taught for 15 years. My primary focus has been in the elementary grades from 1st through 6th in math and science with vocabulary development. I utilize technology, manipulatives, step by step directions, and I know that there are multiple ways to solve many types of mathematical problems. I do not believe in forcing one to utilize my way of thinking as long as the steps of problem solving can be explained by the student while making sense using mathematical logic or reasoning.

The technical vocabulary is usually where I’ll begin with science. Using an interactive notebook for all of the scientific processes, I will work with the student to identify the root word meaning along with the prefixes or suffixes in an effort to create our own definition of the word, which leads to a deeper understanding of the concept.

Interactive notebooks are kept with the correct spelling of the word, meaning of the word, creating a definition in our own words, drawing a picture to illustrate the word, and using the word in a sentence. Roots, prefixes, and suffixes are identified in an effort to create meaning.

Many strategies have been utilized for helping students with ADHD, including timers, frequent breaks, graphic organizers, hands on manipulation of objects, and technology to name a few.

I have helped many who were struggling in our educational system. Some were up to 2 grade levels behind at the time we began working together. Every kid can learn and maximize their potential. Some just need someone who understands that they weren’t created to thrive in a traditional classroom setting, especially those with ADHD.
