"Hello! I'm Evie. I am currently a senior at Berea College seeking a degree in Child and Family Studies. I have worked for Berea's Writing Resources since I was a freshman and have been a peer writing tutor for almost three years now. I have tutored over 137 students through face-to-face, online synchronous, and asynchronous sessions. Berea classes are very writing centric, so I have a lot of experience writing argumentative essays, research papers, personal reflections, literature reviews, and more. I have also been trained to review resumes and cover letters. I am comfortable tutoring in MLA, APA, and Chicago and I stay up to date on the latest changes to each citation style.

I love everything about being a tutor. My favorite sessions are for brainstorming and outlining because I find this is when students are most excited about their topics. I work for a wonderful director who ensures that we are trained to understand not just academic writing, but the inequalities perpetuated by Standard English. Because of Berea's unique model of providing a tuition-free education with a focus on low-income, African American, and/or Appalachian students, I have become very comfortable helping dialect speakers codeswitch between their home dialect and Standard English. For me, being a tutor is not just about helping you improve one paper; it's about helping you find your place in academia, figuring out what tools work for you, and ultimately helping you become a better writer.

My experience as a writing tutor for Writing Resources has prepared me to work with students in a variety of disciplines at any experience level. I have helped ESL students with grammar and vocabulary, proofread 40-page senior capstone papers, provided feedback on literature analyses, even aided in the design and content of PowerPoint presentations. When I greeted visitors to our center I always said, "If it involves words, we can help you."
