"I’ve been an educator and tutor for 17 years. In regard to tutoring, the first thing I do when I meet potential students is do a diagnosis of their skills. This can be a short test or assessment so I can determine what they have mastered, what they may need to review and what they don't yet know. While the students are taking the prescribed assessment, I would use that test time to review their old worksheets, notebooks, quizzes and tests so I can get a better sense and understanding of what they know as well as their study habits, note-taking skills, learning styles and test taking ability.

Once I have assessed their skill level, I will then share that information with the students. While pointing out weaknesses may be easier, it's important to motivate students by showing their strengths as well. It is imperative in any conversation with students about their level or progress to always end on a high note so they feel good about what they've accomplished thus far.

The third of part of my tutoring methods and techniques is to make a checklist -write down the different topics the students will be learning. A list is an easy and effective way for both me and my students to see our weekly progress. It can also aid students in remembering what they studied previously. Thus, when we’re finished studying a topic, I let the students be the ones to check off their progress on the chart. Not only will they get a sense of accomplishment, but they will also be motivated to start the next topic.

The most important aspect of all tutoring methods and techniques is attitude. If you believe that your students can master the material and feel good about themselves, then they will succeed. All of the educational technology, mnemonics and other strategies in the world cannot replace enthusiasm as the best instructional method. This and the other tutoring methods and techniques are the best tool for professional development and keeping students motivated, satisfied and ready to recommend you to their friends." less...
