"Hello! My name is Laura Crawford and I am a teacher for the School District of Philadelphia. I have been teaching since the year 2000 when I graduated from Holy Family University. However, I had prior teaching experience by tutoring and teaching catechism classes too. My degrees are in early childhood education and elementary education. I earned BA's in both areas as well as holding certifications two in both areas.
While I was in Holy Family, I learned a lot from my professors such as lesson planning, educational laws, common core, testing, and grading. However, my professors also taught me a lot more. They taught me how to not look at the classroom of students as a whole but at the individual students in each classroom. Each child learns in their own way. One child can learn through simple instruction and visual aids while others may need tactile techniques to comprehend what is in front of them. My professors taught me that as the adults we need to look and help the students find their best way of learning so they can continue to teach themselves throughout their lives. So, each child can grow in confidence and strength, knowing that they can accomplish anything.
I am a believer in the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." Therefore, I always welcome parent(s)/ guardian(s) to be open and ask questions and voice concerns with me so together we can help the child become independent learners.
I like to work with the student (no matter the age) in discovering how they learn. Then finding the best course in helping that student to achieve their goals. For example: I once had a student in fourth grade who was on a first grade reading level. Together with the special education teachers, parents, and myself we learned that this student needed sandpaper letters and words to trace with her fingers that finally connected the dots for this student to move forward with increasing her vocabulary.
Also, by providing one to one proofreading and editing instructions helps the student learn that they have to truly understand and comprehend the material before just jotting down anything on the paper.
Feel free to contact me whenever you need to. I will always get back to you as soon as possible. I do prefer online tutoring; however, I am flexible." less...
