"I have been tutoring young adults for the past ten years while teaching ESL overseas. I have found that dealing with individuals working for specific goals is rewarding because the students can feel a sense of accomplishment when they need a little help to find their own abilities. Working with individuals is very rewarding to both the student and the teacher so tutoring is as rewarding as working in a classroom situation. I feel that the students I tutor have a specific goal in min, and I am able to help them meet their aims and goals through guiding them. I am able to teach both basic grammar and practical skills. For example, if students need help in grammar or vocabulary development, I have the necessary knowledge to help him or her meet his or her goals. If a student needs the more practical skills such as reading for information, or writing a paper then I would be able to help him/her in that area because of my experience in teaching academic English.

The emphasis in my tutoring experience of the past ten years has been mainly twofold. The first is teaching skills necessary to meet standards on English proficiency exams--both oral and listening as well as reading and writing. The second is helping college students with developing research skills and helping them with their research projects. Over the years, I have found that it is the students wants and needs which push them to excel, and the goal of the instructor is to guide them with his/her expertise that has been acquired over the years of teaching and being involved in ESL.

In addition, to the experience working as an ESL teacher for forty years, I have a Licentiate Diploma in TESOL, Trinity College London. This has enabled me to understand the processes of learning a second language and improved my skills to teach these practical subjects. I have been using the skills I learned to help all my students.
