"Although I am new to Wyzant, I have many years of experience teaching and mentoring students. I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and I hold a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Zoology with a specialization in ecology. I have taught for 30 years (hey, I started young!), and I receive consistently high evaluations from my student because--in their words--I care about their performance, I am understanding about their struggles, and I make an effort to be available and flexible; when I ask my students what they liked most about a course, they frequently respond, "the instructor!".

I find the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the time I get to spend with students one-on-one; I feel that this is where comprehension and engagement are highest, because there is the opportunity to personalize the content and the delivery. As a result, this is the environment that best facilitates learning and retention. My approach to tutoring is to introduce the subject by demonstrating how it is relevant to the student, and I underscore this by using examples from daily life throughout the lesson that are interesting and memorable. As I present the material, I give the student tips on how to organize the material and how to remember it. The student later has an opportunity to practice the material, so that I can assess their level of comprehension and discuss strategies for approaching test questions.

Although my current active teaching is in Anatomy and Physiology, I have designed and taught a wide range of courses including biology, ecology, and environmental science at the college level for both science majors and non-science students. I have also designed a high school course in food science and I am comfortable tutoring at the high school level. In addition, I offer guidance on research projects, editing services for theses and papers, and advice on career pathways in science.
