"I'm a father of four successful kids (two in college and two in HS), and a husband of one great wife. I've tutored folks (mostly HS but some middle school and college age) for over 20 years. "I'm a father of four successful kids (two in college and two in HS), and a husband of one great wife. I've tutored folks (mostly HS but some middle school and college age) for over 20 years. I love motivating people to like math, esp. when they have gaps or have been labelled "bad at math" (which I categorically reject). I also have a lot of experience tutoring in Chemistry, and use computer science and physics as part of my daily work at Electric Boat Corp.

I grew up in Illinois, but moved multiple places while serving 5 years in the US Submarine Service (the awesomest job in the world for a 20-something). I've also taught as an adjunct lecturer in Computer Sci at Rensselaer, and have taught formal SAT prep (Math) at Stonington High.

First I listen, for three things: a) what does the student know? b) how does the student best learn, and c) are the significant gaps that need to be overcome that have caused a cascade of problems (where one subject builds on another, and now you're flailing due to a weak foundation). Then we just work the work!

My mechanical engineering background and experience as a submarine officer (nuc stuff!) gives me tons of practical examples of why Physics is not only important, but also fun. I like to first motivate kids with a "why might this be important to your life" scenario. I believe all learning has value, even if you don't see a direct application to your future.

I've been using Java since before it was cool: 1997. I recognized its value over C++ instantly, and quickly banked my whole career on Java. I've worked in every type of full-stack setup, from EJB / Database backends, to desktop, to micro, to JSP/Servlets and JavaFX front ends. But my favorite use of Java is rapid prototyping for 3D visualization (think: gaming & OpenGL) such as you'd do with a VivePRO Virtual Reality system.

I started teaching guitar when I was 16 & could recite every lyric to any Led Zeppelin song. Now I'm more of a church music & chords guy, and I can encourage you to play an" less...
