"I have been an RN for almost 13 years mostly in the emergency department. I have been fortunate to have had a lot of different learning experiences throughout my career and precept both brand new nurses right out of school and experienced nurses that were new to the department. What I learned is most common between both is no matter how much experience you have, we all have a different ways that we learn. That's the key. I taught both theory and clinical for an LPN program as well. I would tutor many of my students on the side because they simply did not understand the way the book explained it. Once you discover a students way of learning, you can adjust your style of teaching. I like to make learning fun. Nursing school is stressful enough. I know as I am currently working on my MSN. Once you understand the concept you will never forget it. There is nothing more rewarding then the ah-ha moment when a student you have been working will is able to put the puzzle together and have it all make sense. I love being a nurse and enjoy working with anyone that wants to share in that love of caring for others.

When I first started nursing school, I had an A&P professor that specialized in genetics. She spent a great deal of time talking about the "huge" impact that genetics would have on the future of healthcare. She also made a point to tell us to pay close attention in class because anatomy and physiology would always be part of nursing and not go away when we finished this class. She was right--I have used a A&P every day of my career. Understanding structure and function is critical. A& P is the foundation of nursing, if you don't have a good understanding of it you'll be lost as a nurse. It's important to understand how the body works, when it's working correctly so that you can understand what's going wrong when it's not working correctly.

I enjoy teaching because I usually learn something as well. Please contact me with any questions. Let me know what kind of issues you are having. Is it one particular syste" less...
