"Hey, I'm Olivia! I'm currently completing my graduate degree in communications with a full academic scholarship from the University of Cincinnati. I graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2015 with a major in journalism and a minor in Spanish language and culture. While in college I was a student mentor, teachers assistant, and high school tutor at Charlotte High School, tutoring in English, Science and Math. I mainly focused on tutoring 9-11th grade students in writing papers, reading comprehension, and tips for applying to college. During the summer of 2014 and 2015 I worked at Grant Middle School within the Syracuse City School district. While there I was a tutor in the 8th grade math classroom and an ELS tutor for middle school children coming from other countries. Last year, during my first year of graduate school, I was an public speaking instructor for undergraduate students at the University of Cincinnati. This was most challenging and rewarding role working with college students and being responsible for grading and evaluating all their work. It was my first role as assigning homework, grading, and teaching all the information in a class solo, but I truly enjoyed the experience.
Additionally in 2014 I received my TESOL certification while studying abroad in the Dominican Republic from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. While there I taught English classes to college students at the University. Last summer I traveled to Costa Rica and taught English at k-12 English immersion school, through a program with ILISA Language Institute. I was in a 8th and 9th grade immersion classroom doing English speaking activities.
My mother is a college professor in the department of communications and my father is the director of a college STEM program so I've grown up seeing the importance of having good teachers, mentors, and tutors for a student's academic development. I still remember the teacher who had the most profound impact on me, my 9th grade English teacher at Christian Brothers Academy. He made learning fun and interesting and I try to take a similar approach when I am teaching or tutoring a students. I like to use a lot of hands on methods and activities to help students engage with a topic. A lot of my teaching experience revolves around writing and speaking so I like to have students do things like bring in written or oral pieces that they enjoyed and tell me why they thought it was well written or spoken, to pick out the good from those authors and try to incorporate than within their own projects. For my ELS students I focus a lot on the oral conversations and speaking activities, because to me that is the best way to pick up the language. I do an amount of reading and writing with them as well but as they advance in their understanding of the language our oral conversations advance as well.
What I love most about teaching is truly making a connection with students and seeing them excited about grasping a new topic or have fun delivering speeches or speaking in a new language.
