"I am a veteran teacher, tutor and parent. I have worked with students from age four to eighteen including special needs (autism spectrum, learning disabilities, dyslexia) to advanced college-bound high schoolers. I particularly enjoy teaching reading and writing skills to elementary and middle school students, as well as study skills, dyslexia strategies and overall social studies skills for middle and high school.
I hold a BA and MA in history, and have special education training from Johns Hopkins. I am a past holder of an Advanced Professional teaching certificate and have worked as a private tutor, public school intern and private school teacher. Today I am a full time writer trying to break into the "Young Adult" novel market and looking to pair this work with tutoring.
People tell me that I am a very good writer and this is probably my greatest strength. I enjoy the language and helping students embrace how well they already know it. I make it less intimidating, more logical and sometimes even more fun. I particularly like giving practical skills that show how reading and writing works throughout academic topics and am very good at creating structure, organization and also creativity.
History is my passion and by far my most advanced academic topic. I teach social studies in relevant, current ways. It is not about facts and memorization. I teach themes and connections, and with a purpose. Students become aware of patterns and of the relevance of what they are studying. I help them focus on analysis, addressing why things happen and why the topics have value today and for their future.
I struggled as a student with likely undiagnosed mild learning disabilities. I thrive on helping students who don't naturally grasp reading and writing. I understand how dyslexia presents itself, what the challenges are and how to gently but methodically address it. I understand IEPs, accommodations, modifications and the overall challenges of learning differently.
I love tutoring because of the value working o" less...
