"Hi! My name is Sophia. I just recently graduated from Brown University with a Bachelors of Science in electrical engineering. I love sharing my passion for this field, and all the math and science that go into it, with others. In fact, I would eventually like to become a math and science high school teacher.

As someone who has been a teaching assistant in the computer science and engineering departments at Brown, a tutor for Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment, a coordinator of a free engineering camp for rising 10th grade girls, and a peer tutor since I was a freshman in high school, I have a lot of experience working with people of all different learning styles. In my work as a tutor, I find it really important to cater how I teach to the particular student that I'm working with. Not everyone learns in the same way, and that is something that I am very conscious of in my tutoring sessions. I also recognize that I have a lot to learn from the students I work with as well - teaching is really a two way street.

Math is often taught in a way that requires students to memorize. Students have to memorize formulas and methods for solving problems. This is the way I went about learning math for a while, and I did not really enjoy the subject. I started liking it when I was encouraged to approach math in a different and more meaningful way - to understand and derive these formulas and methods so that even if you forget something during a test, you still have the problem solving tools to approach a problem. This is helpful for standardized tests, math tests, and will make you an awesome problem solver! In my past tutoring, I have seen concepts really sink in for my students for the first time - this has happened to me, too, and it’s really such a great feeling!

I have had the opportunity to work as a scientist through doing research in a lab during my undergraduate education. This enables me to have a deeper sense of how to approach problem solving in a scientific setting and how to connect scientific concepts in class to the real world. I like bringing applications of science and math into my teaching and lessons, especially if it helps excite students about the material and grounds the theory in something more concrete. I was a coordinator for an engineering camp where I taught hands-on lessons that did just that and incorporated students’ interests into the projects themselves. I love finding new and creative ways to teach that work best for the students I’m tutoring.

All in all, I’m excited about tutoring and want to have open communication with my students - I want to know what you’re expecting from tutoring, so we can form goals to work towards together. Please let me know if you’re interested in working with me!" less...
