"Hi - After a long career as an actuary, I am now resuming my tutoring practice. I enjoy it when I help someone with a math concept or problem they were having trouble understanding. I've tutored in high school geometry, pre-calculus and statistics. I've helped freshmen at the University of Pennsylvania as well as at Penn State in calculus. I've tutored a mathematics of insurance course to employees of an insurance company.
My strengths are (1) to make complicated math concepts understandable; (2) to make sure that the student has the prerequisite knowledge to undertake the current assignment (math builds on concepts learned earlier - I go back and help the student get "up-to-date" on the work); (3) I am very patient and happy to stay on a topic, approaching it from different angles, until it is understood; (4) I am nonjudgmental; (5) I have a thorough knowledge of the subject matter; and (6) After working with a student for a little while I can usually see what approach works best, enabling me to be as effective as possible.
I work best when the student is motivated to understand the material. If I find I am not helping the student, I will let the student and (if applicable) parent or guardian know.
Actuarial Science - I am a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries; I have over 35 years of experience in the insurance and financial services industries.
Algebra 2 and Calculus - I had an A average in math courses in high school - Algebra 2 (9th grade), Geometry (10th), calculus (11th) and linear algebra (12th grade). I have a Bachelor of Science degree, Mathematics major, from Drexel University.
Logic - I took nine undergraduate credits in Logic and three in Set theory, I took two graduate courses in Computability and Logic at Penn State.
I would be happy to schedule a lesson! I am available most afternoons/early evenings during the week and on some weekend days." less...
