"Hello, I'm Lyle. I'm excited to work with you! In 2019 I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts in English Communication and Technology. Whenever I wasn't in class or studying, I worked as a writing tutor at the Learning Resource Center on campus. The university had very strict standards for its tutors and the application process required an internship that lasted several months, involving both classroom training and a final evaluation by my mentors and supervisor. After being accepted as a tutor for the university, I tutored college students for three years. I love tutoring because it's given me the opportunity to meet and work with all kinds of people. I also write in my free time and find that tutoring helps me as well, keeping my fundamental reading and writing skills sharp. Iron sharpens iron, as they say, and the opportunity to share all that I've learned about writing—from essays to college applications, to short stories and world literature—always gets me excited. I'm thankful that I've also been able to convey that excitement to many of my students.
During my time as a college student, I often thought about the various teaching styles of my different instructors and professors, those that worked for me and those that presented more of a struggle. During my tutoring training, my peers and I were also trained in a variety of teaching techniques and approaches, and one of the lessons that stuck with me the most afterwards was the value of flexibility in tutoring new students. A session at the writing center could be as long as an hour and a half or as short as 30 minutes. In the short sessions especially, this made time very precious. In order to help my students to the best of my ability, I had to learn to adapt quickly to their needs, based both on what they told me and what I observed in their writing. Now, I think this is my greatest strength as a tutor. I understand that students vary widely in their ability, in their level of engagement and interest, and I've accrued a variety of techniques that I can quickly sift through and try with a student until I find the one that fits them best. My primary goal as a tutor is not simply to guide a student through a specific lesson or assignment, but to equip them with reading and writing skills that they can apply to future tasks as well.
Even after leaving the writing center, I continued to tutor some of my old students as personal clients, at their request, which has kept my skills sharp. My flexibility in teaching extends to the requests and suggestions from my students or the parents of any grade-schoolers, and I'm always open to feedback or specific needs. All that said, I hope you'll reach out and schedule a session with me. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have and will be sure to get back to you promptly!" less...
