"Hi, My name's Elizabeth, and I have been a middle and high school teacher for over 30 years. While I taught English/Language Arts and Spanish, I also co-taught algebra, geometry, and history classes at the high school level. I was honored to be chosen as Teacher of The Year at my school a few years ago, and I also mentored new teachers to help them with instructional strategies. While I am always happy to teach a full class of 30 students, I find my best teaching comes when I split students into groups and tailor the assignments to each group as I work with the groups. I always build practice opportunities into my class time because practice is such an essential part of learning and master.
Even though I never completed the paperwork to be certified as an Algebra teacher, I took and passed the certification test. My experience as a co-teacher in algebra and geometry classes has given me lots of hand-on experience with the basics in these areas of math.
My certifications are in English, ESL, and Spanish, and I have worked with both native English and Spanish speakers. lf you can believe it, I really like figuring out grammar problems--some of my favorite parts as an English teacher are editing drafts with my students! I love working with students on their writing: varying sentence structure, choosing strong vocabulary, and crafting catchy introductions. And reading together is fun!
I want to help students at all levels; being able to understand, synthesize, and (eventually) independently work through assignments is key. Learning can be fun, but my years of experience also show me that a certain amount of hard work and practice are necessary. I am open to suggestions from parents and students, and I hope to be a helpful resource. Please feel free to contact me with questions and to schedule your tutoring session!" less...
