"I have taught extensively at the college level: French language, literature, and culture; literature in translation; comparative literature; English composition; and women's and gender studies. I have also taught French to 5th - 8th graders and tutored middle- and elementary-school students. I have traveled to France twice with small groups of university students. Although I love reading and foreign languages, I originally planned to postpone college until my early 40's. I spent high school training as a professional ballet dancer. An injury caused me to rethink my career plans. Since then I have worked primarily as a teacher, but have loved my jobs as a landscaper as well.

Tutoring, unlike classroom teaching, allows me to target lessons to help students strengthen areas of weakness and further develop areas of strength. In a one-on-one setting, students get exactly what they need - no more and no less. I love watching them gain confidence over time.

I hold an M.A. and a Ph.D. in French literature and have taught French for over 20 years in a university setting, from French 101 through advanced literature classes. I have tutored French elementary school students in France and American students of all ages in the U.S. Something about learning a new language often makes us feel like small children again, vulnerable and powerless. Yet it can also be an enjoyable process. Experience has taught me the most common pitfalls. I have developed different strategies for presenting and studying course material successfully.

Reading and writing - not just in French, but also in English - comprise a large part of a professor's job. I strive for clarity and precision in my own writing. At the same time, I have worked with numerous students to hone their ability to express themselves in English.
