"Hi, I'm Joanna! I am a sophomore at Princeton University studying Computer Science and getting a certificate (equivalent to a minor) in Neuroscience. In high school, my favorite classes were AP Chemistry and Calculus. However, I did not like them because they were easy (because they definitely weren't), but because of the attitude and passion my teachers had for the subject and their desire for their students to succeed. Rather than just teaching out of the text book word for word, they made sure each student fully understood the topic before moving on, and spending time before and after school answering questions we had on certain topics. I try and implement this approach when I am tutoring - engage the student in the topic and make sure they completely comprehend the topic before continuing. When tutoring mathematics, I not only teach the topic at hand, but I also try and relate it to different topics previously learned. My philosophy in teaching mathematics is that nothing should be remotely memorized, for math is cumulative, meaning every formula, equation or rule is derived from a previous understanding.

In teaching a new lesson, I begin by introducing the topic using real life examples, for I believe it is easier to understand mathematics when it goes beyond just numbers on a page. Then, I begin teaching the lesson implementing example questions along the way to ensure comprehension. I am patient, friendly and passionate when it comes to tutoring and I make it a priority for my students to succeed.

Growing up as the oldest sister out of two, I was always teaching my younger sisters subjects they struggled with. In high school, I was a part of the National Honor Society Tutoring Program where I stayed after school teaching students we needed help on their homework. Not only did I tutor math, but I also taught English, French, and Biology. I also was an aid for my Chemistry and Biology teacher, where I went around helping students on practice questions and labs. I sometimes tutored one on one outside the classroom as well.

I want to benefit every student I work with, so any resources or suggestions from parents/ students are always welcomed. I have a very flexible schedule this summer and am easy to reach, with a response time in less than 2 hours. Feel free to contact for me if you have any questions or want to schedule a lesson!" less...
