"Hi! I’m Gena. I have 22 years experience teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Piedmont College with both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Early Childhood Education.

I like to make learning fun! I believe ALL students can learn , however not all learn the same way. Some are auditory learners, some are visual learners and some learn best through hands on experience. I like to find out how a child learns best and gear lessons to fit their specific needs. I have accumulated many, many wonderful resources in my 20+ years of teaching that cater to all learning styles. I have never been a private tutor, outside of the school setting. I have, however, held tutoring sessions for individual students and small groups, after school, to help remediate or give certain students a little extra “boost” in a specific area.

Working with students one-on-one is what I enjoy most. I want my students to gain the confidence to be able to say “ I CAN do this”! Seeing something finally “click”, for a student, is what has always brought me the most joy.

I love to read! It has always been my favorite subject to teach and I always found ways to make it fun and interesting for my students. I often had students write about what they had read. This way I could check for comprehension and get in some writing practice at the same time. Reading, in and of itself, is one of the best ways to improve vocabulary. When teaching specific topics, I teach vocabulary specific to that topic (ie For a unit on Penguins, I would use flippers, wings, eggs, waddle, and other words specific to Penguins)

To be a good reader, a student needs to have good foundation in phonics. I first check to see how proficient they are at the most basic level, phonemes, or the sound each letter makes. I then move from there. If they are proficient at the letter sound level, I move on to Blending and Segmenting 3 letter words such as mop, hut, pat. When they have mastered this skill, we would move on to learning about d" less...
