"Hello! My name is Jonathan, and I have worked as an Algebra I/Geometry teacher, a middle school math interventionist, and am currently teaching at a community college. I graduated from Texas Tech University in 2022 with dual Bachelor's degrees in mathematics and music, Summa Cum Laude.
Although my original undergraduate major was in music performance, I knew wanted to do something more meaningful for my surrounding community than playing my cello. I saw the need for math educators because of how many students that I saw struggling, so I chose to orient myself towards this path. After taking classes in education in college and working at a Sylvan Learning Center, I landed a job as a high school Algebra/Geometry teacher in Texas. I was able to help students build confidence in their academics, teach them what a strong work ethic is, and I showed them that being able to learn and understand math can actually be fun. During this time, lots of positive relationships were created since my students saw that I truly cared about them and loved my work.
When I teach math, I see the subject as similar to learning an instrument: math is a skill, not just a matter of memorizing formulas. If a student is struggling with a complex concept, then we must go back and review foundations. That way, we can intuitively understand the ‘why’ of a mathematical process rather than just regurgitating steps. I like to show students patterns and tricks that allows them to understand mathematics as a language of reasoning and problem solving.
I enjoy tutoring students of all levels, from remedial math to college calculus. My goal as a tutor is to help students build confidence in their academics and yield successful grades, and I will ensure to meet them where they are at. If you would like to work with me, feel free to send me a message!
Sincerely, Jonathan M." less...
