"A freelance writer and publicist by profession, I competed in speech and debate in college and was also a judge on the forensics tournament upon graduation. These days, I work in State government and am also the author of the critically acclaimed book, "A Bitter Cup of Coffee," which is widely credited with forcing Major League Baseball and its players' union to compensate retired men for their service and contributions to the national pasttime. When I lived in New York City, I was a substitute teacher licensed by the Board of Education to teach social studies.

But enough about me. How can I help you study and learn? My individually tailored program is age-appropriate to meet each student's needs. Generally, we learn because we're interested in something, not because we're forced to commit it to memory by rote and repetition. By rote doesn't really mean you've learned anything -- just that you remember it.

Sure, if you just want to do something again and again, it'll become so natural that it'll be ingrained in your memory. But while that method is great for tests and just plain remembering, it is also boring. I don't want you to think of studying that way, I want you to think of studying as fun. Remember Tom Hanks, as Josh Baskin, in the movie "Big"? He made algebra fun for the son of the couple hosting a dinner party by making analogies to basketball player Larry Bird. He told the youngster that if Bird scored 10 points in the first quarter of an NBA game, he would probably score 40 for the entire game. One quarter was to 10 points that he scores as four quarters was to X.

Learning is fun -- that's my motto. If you need help, contact me and start embracing the idea that history, government, public speaking and English can be fun topics. And watch your grades soar!" less...
