"When I was a kid I was curious about lots of things, but I found myself so bored in class. I knew I wasn't stupid, but I shied away from some subjects that frustrated me. This is part of the reason I wanted to become a teacher; I wanted to make learning fun, and build confidence in my students.

I have taught kindergarten students, special ed. students, executives, and ESL students. I have tutored in my home and I have taught online and I find that the common denominator of all my years of teaching is the joy of helping students reach their goals. My favorite part of tutoring and teaching is finding a way to make difficult things easier for my students, and to see them light up when they become good at something that used to be difficult.

I have been certified to teach Language Arts from ASCI (Association of Christian Schools International) and a Special Ed. certification from the state of Georgia. When I taught middle and high school English at an international school in China, I found the curriculum to be either too dry or not efficient. I knew that there were better ways to learn vocabulary and grammar and writing, and I spent many hours researching this. I discovered ways to teach writing using color, I taught vocabulary using Greek & Latin roots, and I used peer review to help students help each other. I try to take any lesson and get rid of things that are not useful and focus on what students need to get to the next level. I also have taught math from K-Algebra 2 & really enjoy that as well.

First of all, students who hire a tutor are not stupid; they are smart! Sometimes trying to understand difficult content in a big classroom is not the best way to learn. Some of us learn better when we sit down one on one with a caring tutor. The first thing I do when tutoring is to ask my students this question: "Tell me why you hate _________." Then I try to figure out creative ways to help you reach your goal as we tackle the subject matter in small steps. We go at your pace, but I know how to plan for the next hurdle. And we do it with kindness, laughter, and creativity." less...
