"Hi, I'm Lika! I graduated valedictorian from the International Baccalaureate program at a public High School in Japan with a 7 in Japanese B. Currently I am an undergraduate student in Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology. Although my mother is Japanese, I did not learn how to speak Japanese until I moved to Japan when I was 15 and taught myself the language while at a public Japanese Junior High School. This has given me a unique perspective on learning Japanese as a second language, as well as an approach I am eager to share with others. Over the 4 years I lived in Japan, I have developed many methods and tips to not only remember but engage with the language. I have a genuine passion for Japan, and am willing to work with students at their pace to achieve their goals.
As someone who learned Japanese predominately by myself in the context of a native Japanese school environment, I focus on teaching the language in conjunction with the culture of Japan. Earning a 7 in the International Baccalaureate Japanese B exam, I am also able to teach grammar and test taking strategies. I also have 6 months of work experience in a cafe in Tokyo, so I am also familiar with workplace Japanese. I struggled a lot with the language when I first moved to Japan, but because of that I am now confident in my ability to teach useful Japanese that will prepare students to spend time in Japan.
I aim to develop my lesson plans specifically to fit the needs of each student, whether it be to pass an exam or learn colloquial Japanese. Therefore, I offer a free consultation meeting for prospective students to discuss their goals and preferred ways of learning. I am always willing to incorporate any suggestions students have to improve their experience. All questions are welcome, so feel free to contact me at any time." less...
