"am an undergraduate studying French and Spanish at the University of Oxford. I have a great passion for my degree because it allows me to gain a profound understanding of different cultures-and fluency in two languages! My degree thus far has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had and I am enthusiastic about helping others to achieve the same opportunity.

At A level, I achieved A* grades in French, Spanish and English language and Literature, as well as an A in History. Achieving such results was undoubtedly challenging, but I know that it is completely possible and I am keen to use my own experience and revision techniques to help others reach their full potential in exams. I have found that the key to succeeding academically is truly understanding the material you are covering, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts.

like to incorporate a variety of different teaching techniques (e.g. visual, written, spoken) to suit the needs of my students. I hold myself in an approachable yet professional manner and with a sense of humour in order to strike the perfect balance between running my tutoring session effectively and making the student feel at ease.

A typical lesson structure I use is beginning with an overview of the topic we will cover. I encourage the student to tell me what they may already know about the topic and the aspects which they still need to improve. If required, it is at this stage where I check any work already prepared and give feedback, for instance a piece of homework. Based on the difficulties that the student has voiced, and what I have noted myself, I will then concisely explain these concepts that he or she needs to work on, providing plenty of examples. As the latter activity is particularly effective at boosting confidence, I then give the student some exercises to complete them to explain the reasoning behind their answer. If I am teaching French or Spanish, I try to compare these structures to the English to further consolidate understanding. I then assign a longer task, typically speaking practice but with the emphasis on the theme of the lesson. During the last few minutes of the session, we reflect on the student’s learning and how they feel they can fully understand the topic." less...
