"Paul, retired since December 2014, practiced long term care medicine for 40+ years in PA and relocated to SC in 2016. Although he has no formal teaching training, teaching was a frequent responsibility in his professional career. In addition to tutoring mathematics, he is an active wood turner and a member of 2 local artist guilds. He is divorced and has 2 sons and 3 granddaughters and a grandson.

He has recently been tutoring and substitute teaching in a local private high school and has taught in the adult education division of Coastal Carolina University. He is capable of tutoring in any level of mathematics from elementary arithmetic (excluding “common core”) through elementary calculus and elementary probability theory. He can teach you how to do the math, but much more importantly, he will insist on teaching you why the “how to” works. For example, he can show you the mechanical method for extracting a square root, but you will need to learn how that method depends on the square of a binomial.

Paul can teach you "how to" do the math, but he will insist that you learn why the "how to" works. In addition, he believes that mathematics needs to be practical and he will bring examples and problems from real life (e.g. problems he encounters in his word working hobby, or from the kitchen).

Paul hates to have math students so frustrated that they walk away and quit doing math. Instead of quitting, he would prefer that they contact him for help...and he is easily available by any means acceptable to Wyzant." less...
