"My name is Philomena. I have over 13 years of experience as a percussionist in areas ranging from mallet percussion to drum set. I have played in various settings such as classical orchestra and jazz ensembles, with a main focus on mallet percussion. I have over four years of formal training and experience in music theory on topics ranging from harmony and musical analysis, solfege/"sight singing", as well as dictation/ear training.

I am currently a student at Carnegie Mellon University pursuing a B.S. in Music and Technology. My degree incorporates studies within the Carnegie Mellon schools of music, engineering, and computer science. Part of my core education includes studies in harmony / music theory, music history, solfege, and private instruction in percussion performance.

My performance lessons will focus on mallet percussion for beginner to intermediate levels. Not only will these lessons focus on technique and performance in various styles, but also on theory basics and concepts that can be applied to any performer in forms such as chord work, improvisation, soloing, and the ability to efficiently sight read sheet music.

My theory lessons will focus on one specific area or a mix of the following from basic to intermediate levels, per your interest:

- harmonic rules, structure, and analysis of the classical period to present as seen in many classroom theory environments

- solfege / sight singing with traditional solfege syllables using fixed and/or movable do

- dictation / ear training including interval identification training, major/minor/modal key/scale identification training, chord identification training, melodic dictations, harmonic two and four part dictations

You will receive challenging and captivating instruction in any area you choose to start learning or continuing to explore. Whether you are simply interested in picking up a hobby, looking to get a head start for professional studies, or just want some extra help with advanced studies, these lessons are the right place for you!" less...
