"Hi, I'm Justin. I'm currently seeking my doctorate in math. I know you're probably thinking "Geez, get a life dude!" If so, hopefully I can change that mindset. Math is more like puzzles where we have certain rules and regulations that constitute a valid solution, think of it like a game. Mathematics and mathematical thinking are much more about understanding the logic and relationships behind the symbols we manipulate rather than just following memorized rules. And math becomes much easier to comprehend and, dare I say, enjoyable once we begin to get the "why" behind the procedures.
I've had extensive experience with the subjects that I tutor, often having taught those very subjects at the college level. Even though I'm seeking an advanced degree in math, I always strive to deeply understand the concepts I both learn and teach as intuitively as possible, using diagrams, verbal explanations, and even real world analogies. Of course, there are sometimes procedures that need to be memorized, but there is also a need to understand the underlying ideas. I have a knack at being able to get to the heart of a student's difficulties with course material and explain things in a way that a particular student may best understand.
As a college instructor, I have taught courses in basic algebra, pre-calculus, up to finite mathematics (mainly linear algebra and probability) and general statistics. I've worked in the math tutoring centers of major universities tutoring subjects such as the aforementioned subjects but also linear algebra, all parts of the calculus sequence (I-III), and trigonometry.
If you think you might benefit from one-on-one tutoring with someone who has mastery over the subject you feel stressed about, then feel free to reach out to me. I assure you that together we will help you begin to develop your own mastery over the subject and you'll feel the frustration and confusion begin to melt away." less...
