"My name is Miya, and I have been working in education for five years now. Most of my experience is concentrated within the Middle School age group, grades 6th- 8th although I have some experience tutoring students in K- 5th grade as well. I specifically focus on Math & ELA Literacy and Comprehension. I enjoy working with students to catch them up as well as pushing them ahead in their studies. I also have the capabilities to work with students in Science and Social Studies as I have spent time resident teaching 7th Grade US History and have experience guest teaching all the major Middle School subjects

My degree is an entirely different area of expertise, the Hotel & Restaurant Food and Beverage industry. I now utilize these skills by teaching students knife skills and overall kitchen readiness. I know what understanding looks like in a child. I realize how frustrating it can be to not understand and how rewarding it can be to have that aha moment when new concepts connect with prior knowledge and concepts. I have studied and continue to study child development in social and cognitive aspects to know what questions to ask and to find the best ways to teach students. Lastly, I believe in empowering students with study and organizational skills to be their own advocates.

I have a love for words and written language, and what it means to have the tools to articulate oneself to others through reading, writing and speaking. It brings me joy to teach others how to effectively use language to connect with other people.
