"I am a retired public school educator. My long and successful career includes 14 years as an Algebra I teacher and 11 years as an administrator. I possess a Professional Clear Single Subject Credential in Mathematics, a Professional Clear Administrative Services Credential, a M.A. in Educational Administration, and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science.

While I am authorized to teach any K-12 course in Mathematics in the state of California, I would prefer to work with middle or elementary school students. My pedagogical philosophy is simple. In accordance with the latest research on how mathematically proficient learn, I believe that a student’s success in Mathematics in predicated upon focus, coherence, and rigor.

The first step on the road to success in Mathematics begins with focus which means that a student needs to develop a deep conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas. This is best done concretely using manipulatives or pictures. The second step is for students to connect mathematical ideas within and across grade levels in the mathematics domains of: The Number System, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Expressions and Equations, Functions, and Statistics and Probability. These connections must be done with direct instruction and intentionality from the teacher. From focus and coherence will come rigor which is a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and the application of these skills to solve non-routine problems.

Additionally in accordance with the latest research, mathematically proficient students engage in the following practices as they learn math concepts, skills, and problem solving abilities. Mathematically proficient students:

1.Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

2.Reason abstractly and quantitatively

3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

4.Model with mathematics

5.Use appropriate tools strategically

6.Attend to precision

7.Look for and make use of structure

8.Look for and express regu" less...
