Education and Qualifications

school: Santa Clara, Pacific University, and Portland Community College

With my dad's encouragement, I attended Santa Clara University engineering/computer science program directly out of high school. After a year & a term of dissatisfaction with my health & my chosen major, I tried to switch to performing arts, but Mom & Dad insisted I return to Oregon & attend PCC. Since then I've earned a limited energy technician journeyman license, a CNA license, now both expired, & a BA in psychology from Pacific University, where I mentored other students in general psychology. I now have 3 teenagers of my own. When our youngest boy began having problems in his 8th-grade year, we decided I would home-school him. He progressed about 2 grade levels in almost every subject I taught him. Although he was evaluated at least 3 grades behind his chronological age level at that time, he is now in high school. With his current freshman curriculum that includes all normal level classes & only 1 period of special help each day, he is now the best student, grade-wise, in our household--he is succeeding in his freshman year virtually all on his own! I still help my kids with their homework now & then, but so far he's been managing fairly well without my help. When I began homeschooling my stepson, he was a very reluctant student, unmotivated to do any overly challenging assignments. At first, I enthusiastically handed him assignment after assignment then helped him complete what he could not or chose not to do on his own. I made out new daily lesson plans every week. I charted & graphed his progress on Excel. Later, I cut back on assignment quantity & focused instead on finding creative ways to show him learning need not always feel like work. Together we explored games, pictures, videos, music, & art. I tailored worksheets to suit his deficient areas of focus. I made numbers & math symbol cards for him to rearrange instead of writing everything down, which he found tedious & inevitably discouraging. I found or created models to demonstrate concepts like decimal places & the positive and negative powers of ten (along with monopoly money & some paper "coins" I created on my own to symbolize decimal values less than 1/100th of a dollar). I still encourage all my kids to create models or drawings if it helps them conceptualize complex ideas. I also repeatedly encourage them to prewrite to generate ideas for their writing, to show every step of their work for their multi-step problems (even if they can do them in their heads), and to double-check their work for preventable mistakes before turning it in.
