"My name is Laurel G. and I am currently a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, College Park, and I am pursuing a B.S. in Biological Sciences and Mathematics. I am also in the Gemstone Honors College, a four year research program at the university. During high school, I spent a lot of time individually tutoring other high school students in the areas of math and science as a member of the National Honor Society. I also tutored at an elementary school, helping first grade students with math and science. In addition, I spent two summers volunteering at the Council Rock School District Summer Academy, during which I worked in first and third grade classrooms helping students develop their reading, writing, and mathematics skills. As a current student at UMD, I have a tutoring position at a high school, in which I work both in classrooms and one-on-one helping students develop their math skills, as well as with science projects. Classes I have worked in include algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. In the fall, I will begin a tutoring position at the University of Maryland's Math Success Program, during which I will tutor students who are taking college-level math classes. One of the experiences I have enjoyed the most is being part of a volunteer organization at my university called Teaching Underrepresented Sciences to Kids. As a member of this organization, I created lesson plans about various science topics and presented them with a few other students to a fourth grade class at an elementary school in Maryland. I would present the material to students, then work with them in groups and allow them to ask questions while also leading them through activities related to the content being discussed.
I feel that through my various tutoring experiences and other experiences working with students of many ages, I have developed skills in both communication for teaching mathematical concepts and in understanding by working with students of different skill levels and with different backgrounds. These experiences have also helped me become a very good listener, and I have learned how to better identify a specific concept or idea that a student is struggling with and approach it in a new way. I am also generally a very positive person, and I feel that aside from the actual act of helping with skills directly, I would contribute to a positive atmosphere of learning and provide continuous encouragement for students." less...
