"After graduated Brooklyn College (Macaulay Honors Program) with two bachelor degrees in biology (BS w/ honors) and chemistry (BA), I am currently a medical student at NYU School of Medicine. I've tutored a variety of subjects throughout college and have truly enjoyed the teaching experience. Effectively explaining material to fellow students was how I confirmed my own understanding of course material. By continually explaining topics to either peers or students I tutor, I've learned how to give concise, direct and easy to follow explanations. I believe that a thorough understanding of processes, significance and applications of processes builds a strong framework on a topic. I try to avoid bulk memorization of random facts when possible. Someone with a complete rounded understanding of a topic will be less intimidated by a complex problem.

In math, many seemingly complex problems can be understood by applying a few fundamental ideas alongside formulas. These fundamentals act as the foundation that the framework is built upon. Chemistry also requires a thorough understanding of fundamental ideas and uses them to explain how molecules behave on a small scale. General chemistry covers a large variety of topics, but problems tend to test one's understanding of specific concepts and molecular behaviors. As long as the necessary ideas are understood, the problems are manageable. Physics requires the application of equations to paint a complete picture of the macroscopic world around us. Someone who understands physics could look around a room and understand how the light in the room behaves and all the forces involved when they move an object on their desk. Biology is similar to understanding how a machine works. Biological systems have several moving parts with coordinated motions that achieve specific goals or purposes. It is always important to ask "why?" in biology. The sciences on the MCAT are not excessively detail oriented and focuses on the understanding of concepts. My learning and teaching approach is very effective for preparing for the MCAT. The MCAT can ask a large variety of possible questions. Knowing how to apply concepts and formulas allows test takers to tackle seemingly difficult and foreign problems.

I have several years of tutoring experience, which includes teaching a few dyslexic students in math and chemistry. I have tutored many different students across many different grade levels. In high school, I group tutored pre-calculus and calculus. In college, I expanded my tutoring biology and general chemistry in one-on-one session. Across all subjects, every student I've consistently tutored has had drastic improvements in their grades. For instance, when started tutoring one student she had a 65 in chemistry and test grades in the 40s. In one marking period, my student went from a 65 to an 85 in chemistry. Her largest weakness was in terminology, so I continually asked for definitions and incorporated the terms into our content reviews. I graduated with a 3.85 overall and science GPA and scored a 38 (BS-14 PS-14 VR-10) on my MCAT. I've received an A or A+ in every class I'm offering to tutor. The main comments students and parents have given me on my performance is that I'm very patient and am doing a great job because the student is able to grasp the material." less...
