At the age of 4 I knew the flute was my life’s work. By the age of 5 I also knew that I wanted to live and teach in Africa. As I became an adult my dream remained strong in my heart. In the process of getting my degree I became married and had four children. This dream to live and be a flutist in Africa became a hopeless memory. My work as a wife and mother outweighed the passions of ever going to Africa as well as being a flutist. After 10 years my flute sat on the shelf. Finally one day I decided to pick it up again. I finished my B.A. and moved quickly onto my M.M. It was during this time that I received the opportunity to do a study abroad class in South Africa. From some research I did through this class I came upon the opportunity to teach some orphaned children in Adigrat, Tigray, Ethiopia. In 2009, through lectures and benefit concerts, I collected 8 flutes and headed to Ethiopia to begin my flute school. The sisters at the Catholic Orphanage recognized my teaching experience and requested I instruct other students that belonged to the St. Lucy Primary School. Immediately my flute school went from 10 students to 60 students. After that first visit I returned to Ethiopia 4 more times, during the span of 18 months, I brought with me more flutes, music, music stands and metronomes. The school quickly advanced from 8 flutes to 45 flutes, an assistant, 50 students, and a continuous stream of eager learners. In the early spring of 2011 Mekelle University launched a new music department. Very impressed with the work I did in Adigrat, Mekelle University invited me to join their department and develop their new B.A. Music Degree Program.
I have been through humble beginnings to the grand vision to develop two independent community music schools and the higher music education program in Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia. The people of Tigray have the desire to learn music through any instrumental medium. It is my dream to make this available to any person who wishes to learn. The dream was accomplished. I worked in Ethiopia for 5 and half years. I wrote the curriculum programs and developed the second higher degree for their Bachelor of Arts General Music Degree program, their extension program, and their summer In-Service for music education program. I have launched a large amount of students and educators into the community with powerful education and skills to carry on the dream of music in education for Ethiopia. I am freelance musician with my B.A. in Flute Performance and M.M. in Flute Performance and Pedagogy. I have performed in the United States of America, Canada, and Ethiopia. I have over 20 years’ experience as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician, clinician, adjudicator, and instructor. I can bring to you my education and experience for all ages. I am hopeful to bring in the life of music that is best for you and expand your world through music." less...
