"Well, if you want someone a bit different to work with you or your kids, you've found the right person! The fact that my working life has been a twisted road is to your benefit, as I have worked in Management in the technology industry, taught ESL, tutored my kids and grandchildren, worked in academia as a faculty member, published, presented at conferences, and more! My own research is interdisciplinary and uses technology and the digital humanities, so, for example, in history I try to instill in my students a reverence for the past while using contemporary methodologies for exploring that past. Primary sources are also used, and my own education, experience, and research supports this as my work has included archival studies, performing arts librarianship, and diachronic studies of texts (danced and written). I also use motion capture as a means of studying movement, and as a future possibility for virtual reconstructions as a pedagogical tool (imagine Baroque dancers in a 3D Versailles). So it's safe to say that I don't think like everyone else; I am a big picture person, but can work with details. As a Myers-Briggs INTJ, and a Gardner ‘Existentialist’ learner, I am comfortable within the land of ideas. But not all students learn the way I learn; some wish to be directed more than others, and their comfort zones can vary, even from course to course (e.g. theory vs. studio, history vs. analysis). So I strive to find ways to reach all of my students.
The most basic point in my teaching philosophy: to help students make connections with people, with content, with ideas, within themselves. My goal is not to stuff a student’s head full of facts, even though I offer several of them when teaching both theory and studio courses (did I mention that I also teach and choreograph dance?). Instead, I want the student to take the information I offer and use what they can in order to learn for themselves. I ask questions to spur their imagination, to initiate critical thought, and to help them find answers. Through doin" less...
