"I’ve always had a love of music, having played piano for over 35 years and earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in music theory/composition. "I’ve always had a love of music, having played piano for over 35 years and earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in music theory/composition. I also play a number of other instruments and really enjoy exploring how each one is unique---the different ways to play them, how they add to an ensemble, what things are easy or difficult on each, and more. I’ve also been interested in computers for nearly as long, and have explored a wide range of programs, mainly focused on digital media (graphics, music, video, and animation) as well as game design. The creative possibilities in the digital realm truly are endless, especially if you learn some programming, because you can create new interactive works that never existed before.

Through all of this I’ve also had a passion for education. I love exploring how people learn and figuring out the best ways to inspire and motivate learners (including myself!). Seeing that “aha” moment in the classroom or in a tutoring session is a wonderful thing…it means you’ve really helped someone “get it”, and that will have a ripple effect going forward. Equally important is helping someone manage frustration or struggle as they are working through something difficult, because if the experience ends negatively, they may lose motivation to keep learning. Finally, I love the challenge of teaching itself---to be effective you have to not only know the material and prepare good activities, you need to be continually flexible as you interact with students…even the best-laid plans can go awry, so the right modifications can get everyone back on track. This “on-the-fly” adaptability is a hallmark of the most effective teachers, and when you’re in the zone, there’s nothing like it!

I’ve worked with Photoshop for over 20 years and included it in many of my classes. It’s an amazing program with a lot of powerful features, many of which aren’t well-known to the casual user. I greatly enjoy showing students these features and seeing what they do with them---show the concept and have them" less...
