"I retired this June from my work as a full time science teacher at Marshall Academy, a charter school in southern Michigan. I will still be helping the Academy part of the time this coming year, directing a state-funded savannah restoration project which I initiated this spring and conducing field trips and acting in other capacities.

Laboratory and hands-on work played a major role in my curriculum at the Academy, and I used the outdoors as a laboratory when I taught earth science and biology. I tried to give as much individualized attention as I could to students who were economically or developmentally handicapped and devoted my planning periods exclusively to working with them. An article I published in the fall 2018 Michigan Earth Scientist documents the way I asked many of these students to give short talks about the different geological formations we saw on our annual trip to the Upper Peninsula and the way I used their talks to trigger group discussion. Three years ago, before I was hired at the Academy, I worked with autistic students as a paraprofessional at Doris Klaussen Developmental Center in Battle Creek, teaching teenagers and young adults whose reading and oral and mathematical skill were often at a third grade level or less and succeeded many times in bringing them to higher plateaus They responded to me, as my more recent students have, because I stayed on their own plane without condescending and kept them interested and involved.

I hold a B.A. degree in English and a M.A. in comparative literature. I completed all English Ph.D. requirements except my dissertation and also worked three years towards a B.S. in chemistry. Earlier teaching experience encompassed many years of middle school science teaching in public and parochial systems as well as adjunct work as a college English composition instructor and work in the National Park Service as an interpretive ranger.

Students whom I have worked with as individuals and members of small groups have always advanced, often dramatically." less...
