"I'm Elijah! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and a minor in Statistics. I later earned a Master's degree in Mathematics. My interest in math was nurtured by my Junior High School teacher who later became my mentor. His indepth knowledge of the material, along with his enthusiasm and communication skills worked beautifully together to engage me in the learning process. This made the subject enjoyable to me and I gained greater confidence in my ability to learn what was being taught no matter how difficult it appeared to be at first. I try to follow my mentor's example when I tutor students. I am a good communicator who can discuss difficult topics in ways that students can easily relate to and understand. I am very patient, a good listener, and flexible in my approach, which enables me to quickly adapt to a student's specific learning style.
I have more than 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I tutored college students while I attended college. I later taught undergraduate Mathematics courses at the University of Arkansas. I have also tutored Chicago Public High School students in subjects ranging from basic math to precalculus. I worked with two different groups of Chicago Public School students. One group consisted of honor students who were preparing for the Illinois math competition among high school students, and the other group consisted of students who were falling behind and needed extra assistance. I also work with my church in its outreach to students who need help with their math subjects.
I give students measurable objectives for each tutoring session. I then follow up with positive and constructive feedback along the way to help them overcome any potential math anxieties they may be experiencing as well as to let them know how well they are grasping the material. I have students work through a large number of exercises with varying degrees of difficulty because I strongly believe that repetition is a powerful force in reinforcing learnin" less...
