"My name is Jeffrey K., and I have a passion for tutoring. I first started when I was in high school, where, as a member of National Honor Society, I was required to tutor at least 20 minutes a week. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up spending all of my non-classroom time in the tutoring facility, where I worked with three students for a total of 5-6 hours a week. I love tutoring because of the confidence it builds - as I began working with my first student in geometry, she understood nothing and had a solid F in the subject. As we worked together, her understanding grew, and the next quarter, she earned a C - her grade shot up a solid 25 points! I felt just as good as she did. My methodology is not to drive students directly to the answer; rather, it's to ask questions designed to lead them to the answer, helping out along the way if necessary, but trying to make the student think as much as possible along the way.
On a more personal note, I attended Daniel Hand High School in Madison, CT, where I took all classes on a Level 1 Track, took 6 Advanced Placement courses, excelled in math, and graduated as my high school valedictorian. I then attended the University of Maryland, where I majored in physics (and, consequently, took very advanced math courses along the way). I used this as a stepping stone to major in Meteorology at Penn State University, which once again required more intense math. After working in the field for a little while, I decided it wasn't for me, and I came back home to Madison to reset.
While attending Quinnipiac University at night for a Master's in Medical Laboratory Sciences, I got myself on the tutoring list for Daniel Hand, and continued to work with students at times when I did not have class. Currently, I live in Cromwell, CT, and I work at Uconn Health as a Research Assistant II in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences.
