I understand that students have different learning styles and my need to hear things explained several different ways before they understand it. Many students have told me over the years that they didn't like science before they had my class or they thought they were no good at math before my class.

I like to use analogies of more familiar things to illustrate abstract science concepts, and use concrete examples for math skills (sharing for division for example). I use examples and a lot of questioning of students to understand their thinking to identify their difficulties or misconceptions. This questioning also models the self-questioning students need to develop and helps them identify their learning patterns and thought processes.
