"Introduction.
My name is Nick. I've been tutoring math on and off for 15+ years, and I have about 6 years of experience teaching math as an instructor or teaching assistant at the college level. I've taught everything from remedial courses to advanced undergraduate topics.
Expectations.
I expect my students to excel. I believe that a large burden of the learning rests on my shoulders, and I put forth my best effort to make sure my students get the most out of each lesson.
Goals.
My goal is for a student to understand the material well enough that s/he will be able to teach the material to his/her peers or, at the very least, explain all the major concepts in his/her own words and demonstrate some level of deeper understanding of the material.
Logistics.
In the event of a canceled appointment, I simply ask to be notified as soon as possible, but at least 12 hours in advance. If late cancellations become common, I sometimes charge for the inconvenience and for the missed opportunity to tutor other students (but this is generally not a problem).
Lessons.
Lessons are, of course, adaptable to the needs of the individual student. Some students do well thinking through problems on their own, and asking the occasional conceptual question; other students require some additional guidance throughout a problem, until their confidence has grown into the mathematics they're attempting to do. The job of a skilled tutor is to find the correct balance for each student, asking the right questions at the right time, providing the opportunity to learn.
Homework.
Students often have homework to do from their own classes. If I believe a student would benefit from additional practice, I will typically suggest some practice problems. Students seeking an additional challenge are always welcome to ask for more homework!
Coursework.
I've taken dozens of math and physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Please feel free to contact me for any inquiries regarding special topics, including courses that are not" less...
