"In 1991, I returned to college at Cape Cod Community College to pursue a career in engineering. After my first year, I was approached by a school sponsored program, the Student Support Services Program, to become a chemistry tutor. The program worked with returning student as well as those with learning disabilities. I was given training in tutoring techniques, working with students with learning disabilities and English as a second language (ESL). For the next 2 years, I tutored in Chemistry and all math classes up to the Calculus II level. I found the experience enjoyable and rewarding.
I moved on to Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1994 and, through the Work Study Program, I was again hired as a tutor. I was given a room in the Academy library, 3 times a week for 3 hours, and I was available for tutoring in all math, science, and engineering courses. It was a workshop environment, and I would work with students in multiple courses at the same time, moving from study table to study table. Again, it was enjoyable and rewarding. I graduated as the Class Valedictorian in 1996. I worked internationally in the oil and insurance business, but ultimately decided to come home to enjoy my grand children, (3 with another on the way). I am now a Licensed General Contractor, doing high end finish carpentry, as well as hanging custom window treatments that my wife makes in her own workshop.
I look forward to more enjoyable & rewarding work as a tutor, inspired as always as I see the light go on as students grasp the difficult concepts of math and science." less...
