"Hello! Elizabeth here. I hold a social science PhD. After graduating from college Phi Beta Kappa, I went on to do a second BA at Oxford University in the UK. I have a decade of experience teaching college and graduate students, both in the classroom, and one-on-one, as an advisor and mentor. I've worked as an independent tutor for four years, supporting college students in a range of social science and humanities subjects, as well as graduate students. When tutoring, I try to provide the kind of individualized support that classroom instructors are not always able to offer. That may mean helping a student identify what part of a course is causing them trouble (it's not always obvious!), or focusing in on a specific part of the course material, or working together through a challenging assignment. Needs vary, and I try to be as flexible as possible in my lesson style. After taking the time to establish what your are (I don't charge for this), I'll offer you some options about how we might approach them together.

I've also worked professionally as a writer and editor. I love the English language, and I aim to help my students befriend it. Writing is your tool to express your ideas -- so college students are often told. But when the ideas are complex ones, that can be intimidating! When I started college I struggled hard to even begin writing, making every paper deadline a fiasco. Years later, when I began teaching at an Ivy League institution, I realized that many of my students were having similar experiences: They had ideas about the material, but no idea how to turn their insights into essays that met the course requirements. Over the years, I've developed a number of practical ways to help students approach the challenge of writing about advanced material, freely, precisely and effectively. I breaking down good writing into manageable parts (not necessarily more steps), that students can get comfortable and familiar one by one. My goal is for writing to become a tool that helps you think and learn." less...
