"👋 Hi there! I'm Michael, a data science consultant and tutor passionate about making hard topics as simple as possible - especially AP statistics, advanced stats, research, and writing.

👨‍🎓 I earned my Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2018, specializing in data science. Around my 5th year teaching stats, my students began to tell me "This was so helpful, I wish my other teachers would have explained it this way"!

🤓 My students make more progress than they thought possible, for a few reasons. First, I only teach topics I’ve mastered. Second, I have a unique ability to appreciate where my students are, and to see a custom learning path from their starting point to their goals. Third, I combine the neuroscience of learning and social-emotional training to keep my students in the pocket for optimal learning - balancing comfort and challenge.

🪴 I first get to know my students, and understand their goals and needs. I work with students who are brand new, highly advanced, as well as students with learning disabilities who need an especially patient and attuned teacher. We alternate between big picture and details. This rapidly connects dots, checks for holes in their understanding, and corrects false assumptions. This often includes completely re-teaching course materials, but making it intuitive.

🐣 ​​This is our goal - intuition. Most people learn stats by memorizing equations. (And so most teachers can only show you the equations they memorized.) But memorization lasts until the exam and is forgotten. Our goal is to build your statistical literacy, which builds not only confidence on exams, but a capacity for critical thinking, in science and in the complexity of modern life.
