"The walk into the chapel of the Athens-Clarke County prison is a short one – no more than ninety feet. That short distance is replete with security checkpoints, metal detectors, and barbed wire; the facility itself seems built to house the most hardened and desperate criminals. Tensions rise within newest members of the Athens Prison Tutorial as we hear the dull ringing of the prisoners’ thick boots striking flimsy metal stairs creating an echo against the ubiquitous cinderblock walls. However, our fears are soon allayed by the cheerful shouts of recognition between inmates and tutors. The dystopic surroundings begin to melt away – if only for an hour – as we cast aside our preconceptions in hopes of genuine connection.

My passion for fostering relationships with underserved communities was crystallized through my involvement with the Athens Prison Tutorial. Initially, my attitude towards the prospect of GED-tutoring was decidedly utilitarian – forgoing “idle” chatter for intense and focused teaching. However, I soon found a balance between education and conversation, combining lessons on basic fractions and algebra with dialogues about the justice system and human rights. Even though my work yielded tangible results – in 2017, Athens-Clarke County Prison recorded a state high number of GED completions despite being the smallest prison in the state – its most powerful impact is best summarized by an inmate’s comment as we talked about his time in prison. After much heartfelt discussion, his eyes began to water and he said, “we [were] the only people to treat him as a human being.”

I am currently in my final semester at the University of Georgia, completing a double major in English and neuropsychology. Concurrently, I am also applying to medical school, into which I hope to matriculate in the 2021 term. In this unusual interim period, I am seeking an outlet to remain gainfully employed." less...
