"With 10 years of teaching college physics from non-math based to calculus-based levels, I help students find a way to connect with physics. One of the most important things to know is learning physics is a skill not just in math, but also in how to recognize and organize data. It is so fascinating to see how much can be predicted with just a few pieces of initial information. While knowing physics and math is important, using the logical methods for problem solving can be helpful in fields outside of math and physics.
I have a Masters from Minnesota State University Mankato and a Physics degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Because my primary training is in physics and engineering, I can make connections from basic mathematical lessons and find an importance and a way to visualize what the math concepts mean. By having a visual connection, it makes the mathematical concepts easier to connect to and keep motivated to learn more.
My own experience with fear of physics classes and the struggle to understand concepts and make connections has motivated my teaching. I don't just explain how to do something, but why we do something. Showing key steps and concepts is the textbooks job. I can help supplement the textbook and classroom by demonstrating why the tools are used and what their limits are. There is a satisfaction in watching a student "get it." It never fails to make me smile.
I am never discouraged by questions asked, even if the questions are the same or get asked many times. Not everything will make sense the first time. I encourage all of my students to be courageous and speak up whenever something doesn't make sense. I enjoy finding new avenues to connect the concepts together." less...
