"Hi~ My name is Jennifer. I have a BS in Mathematics and a background in Applied Statistics (graduate study at NYU) and have been tutoring mathematics and statistics for over ten years now. And despite having taught high school mathematics and exam prep both in public and private schools, I still prefer to tutor students one-on-one because I find it to be the most effective method for helping students actually learn new and complicated material.
In addition to tutoring maths, I have also taught high school mathematics, including Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus and AP Stats. I understand how overworked teachers are and how important it is for some students to get extra support outside of the classroom. I also appreciate the skill it takes to be able to say the same thing in many different ways, whereas some teachers think that if they repeat the same directions over and over, their students will eventually understand. The great thing about tutoring one-on-one is having the chance to understand how individual students learn best and adapt appropriately. I am extremely patient with all of my students and am very creative when it comes to finding ways to explain complex concepts and effectively communicate the big picture.
I have experience working with all types of students, from those who are not being challenged enough in the classroom to those who have a lot of difficulty just keeping up with the rest of their class, whether it is because of a learning disability or just the inability to stay focused.
Unlike a lot of other tutors, I do not tend to work with the same students for long periods of time. Instead of simply helping students with their homework, I like to help them develop their own strong study habits and learn how to answer their own questions so that they can effectively teach themselves and not always have to depend on a tutor. Personally, I feel this is the goal of any good teacher; to not just teach a subject, but to teach students how to learn on their own." less...
