"Hi there! My name is Matt and I am a full-time professional tutor and homeschool teacher. My background includes graduate-level education coursework at UCLA, pre-medical training, and a BA in psychology with minors in Spanish and Chinese language. I worked for six years in academic psychiatry and neuroscience research at UCSF. While on a Fulbright English teaching fellowship, I was fortunate enough to be awarded an Outstanding Teacher Award for my work abroad.

My love of learning parallels my love of teaching—over the past decade, I have taught extensively as a K-12 homeschool teacher and tutor, and worked for many years in the field of autism spectrum disorder and special needs. Many of my students are struggling in school, have organizational or executive functioning challenges, or have neurodevelopmental disorders (ASD, ADHD). I am passionate about helping students with special needs in their education and challenging behaviors—COVID has not been easy for anyone, but it has taken a serious toll on special needs families.

How do I approach tutoring, you ask? Most importantly, I find inspiration in the student's interests and hobbies. Research shows that the more intrinsically motivated a student is in a given subject, the harder they will work and the more successful they will be in their studies. For elementary and special needs students, I make use of hands-on tools, such as math manipulatives (think fraction blocks) and reward/schedule boards. I drive around a miniature classroom in my car full of all sorts of games and activities for my students.

Whether it's teaching early reading to a kindergartener or college-level essay writing to an adult with special needs, I am here to help. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to discuss programs tailored to your needs." less...
