"Hi! I'm Nicholas Guild. I have a B.A. from Occidental College in Los Angeles, where I majored in English and minored in Philosophy. Then I went on t the University of California at Berkeley, where I earned an M.A. in Comparative Literature and a Ph.D. in English. I taught in colleges and universities for several years. I wrote critical essays, newspaper editorials and, so far, fifteen novels, all of them published by major New York houses and many published abroad in languages from Japanese to Dutch.

But like everyone who sits down to write, be they old pros like me or absolute beginners, I know what it feels like to face that blank sheet of paper or computer screen and think "Okay, now what?"

And everyone who has been a student knows what it is like to face an assignment that seems beyond their understanding.
